

“God Friended Me” becomes a fantasy-mystery procedural in which, in each episode, Miles and his friends become detective-do-gooders, figuring out who needs help and how they can save the day. The account suggests other friends for Miles, people who need his help. Miles repeatedly dismisses the friend requests as hoaxes until he no longer can. They are scientifically minded doubters who have trouble wrapping their minds around what’s happening to them and why. The characters experience magic with an underlying theme of spiritual quest. “ Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” is a charming dramedy that is easy to get swept up in, largely due to fantastic performances by Levy herself and the rest of the sparkling cast, including Skylar Austin, John Clarence Stewart, Peter Gallagher, Mary Steenburgen and the wonderful Lauren Graham (“Gilmore Girls”). In Zoey’s case, it’s her neighbour Mo (Alex Newell), a gender-fluid singer and DJ who, for the first time, finds Zoey interesting. The world seemingly has conspired to force her out of her shell and not only interact with the people around her but help them in some kind of way.Īs is the tradition in a story in which someone is imbued with some sort of power, there is a believer who accepts them and their power without question, and supports and guides them in their quest.

Most often, what’s communicated is something that they can’t admit to themselves: a co-worker reveals his blind ambition for a job they are both up for her boss unloads her dissatisfaction in her marriage and her best friend confesses his love for her.įor a coder, who previously had no sense of how people around her were feeling, Zoey’s new-found power is unsettling. The characters break into song and sometimes dance as if they were in a musical, but only Zoey can see and hear them. The most recent example is “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” (CTV), in which Zoey (played by Jane Levy of “Suburgatory” and “Evil Dead”) emerges from a bizarre incident involving an MRI machine and an earthquake with the ability to hear the thoughts and feelings of those around her in song.
